Nike Boys v Richmond Kickers

After a very successful PWSI Tournament the Nike Boys took the pitch against the Richmond Kickers. The Nike Boys were beat up after the 5 games in 3 days in Northern Virginia. At game time they had 11 players on the pitch and no subs. Despite a few players nursing injuries the Nike Boys battled to a 2-0 halftime lead. The heat, injuries and lack of substitutes began to mount in the second half and took a toll on the boys. The Nike Boys allowed an early goal to push the score to 2-1. They fought on and almost closed out the game until the final 10 seconds when the Kickers were able to get the ball into the back of the Rush net.

Final Score: VA Rush 2 Kickers 2

PWSI Toys for Tots Tournament - 2010

The U-16 Nike Boys traveled to northern Virginia over the Labor Day weekend to participate in the PWSI Toys for Tots Tournament. The Nike Boys started with a 1-0 win over the NVSC Thunder 94 with the only goal being scored by Brett. Ben celebrated his birthday in style with a pair of goals in the Nike Boys 2-0 win over SYA Alliance in the second game of the day. Sunday kicked off with much of the same. Wes scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over BRYC 94 Elite to give the Nike Boys a 3-0 record after the Bracket games.
In the Semi-Final the Nike Boys took on the SASA Revolution 94 Blue (that is a mouthful). A tight game early on was broken open in the second half when the SASA keeper blocked two shots from Brett but could not hang on to either one. The rebounds by Ben and Augie gave the Nike Boys a 2-0 win and a spot in the Tournament Final against PWSI Courage 94 Red.
In the Final injuries took their toll on the Nike Boys. With only one substitute left on the bench the Nike Boys battled on against the PWSI team and wave after wave of Courage subs. The game was 0-0 at the half but fatigue set in and the Courage took a 2-0 lead. The Nike Boys refused to quit and Wes put the team back in the game with a goal to make it 2-1. This was the only goal given up by the PWSI team in the entire tournament. The Nike Boys battled on but a very late goal gave the PWSI team the game and first place in the tournament.
The Nike Boys scored 7 goals in 5 games. They allowed only 4 goals (3 against PWSI) and Austin had 3 clean sheets. It was a great showing by this team that has only been together a few weeks. Great job coaching by Carey. Also a good chance for the parents and players to get to know one another. Great weekend boys. On to the VCCL and State Cup!

Chesterfield Tournament

The Chesterfield Tournament is history and I don't believe anyone is sorry to see it behind us. No video highlights from the weekend because we really did not have many highlights this weekend. We were missing quite a few players and other players that were there were playing out of their normal position or injured. On the positive side the Nike Boys did get a chance to play a few games together and get back into the soccer mode. For the parents it was an interesting weekend. Frigid cold on Saturday morning and shirt sleeves on Sunday afternoon. Billy Shoen took the opportunity over the weekend to school Darren in the finer points of the tactical side of the game. I think playing 5 up top and one in the back may leave us just a wee bit open for a counter attack, but...
There was one injustice I felt over the weekend. The red card given out in the Richmond FC game to Aron Foster. I was next to the Richmond FC parents (and surprisingly was able to restrain myself from saying anything) and in front of the play when it happened. While challenging for the ball the Richmond FC player grabbed Aron by the head and wrestled him to the ground. Aron got up and pushed the Richmond FC player back and ended up with a red card for his trouble.
Still the rule is ... it is always the player that retaliates that gets the penalty. Keep your heads up and keep your composure. On to the Jefferson Cup.
